Agartala: Senior Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman on Monday said the party will contest the next Tripura Assembly elections independently, ruling out any alliance and asserting that the Congress will take on the BJP on its own.
Speaking at a programme in Churaibari, North Tripura district, Roy Barman urged people to ensure the Congress’s victory in the 2028 Assembly polls, scheduled to be held in early 2028.
“Many will advise you not to join the Congress, but let me make it clear — the party will not forge any alliance in the next elections. The Congress will fight the fascist BJP alone,” the former minister said.
Recalling the 2018 Assembly polls, he noted that the Congress and the CPI(M)-led Left Front had contested jointly in an attempt to defeat the BJP but failed to succeed.
“People want to see Ashish Kumar Saha and me running the government in Tripura. The Congress is the only party capable of countering the BJP’s rise,” he added.
Roy Barman also accused the Election Commission of acting in a “partisan” manner. “Our leader Rahul Gandhi has presented evidence showing how the EC has been making losers the winners and winners the losers. Its conduct is deeply concerning,” he alleged.

During the event, over 450 voters from the BJP and CPI(M) joined the Congress at a programme held at the Churaibari community hall under the Kadamtala-Kurti Assembly constituency.
