India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been hospitalised in Sydney after suffering internal bleeding caused by a rib cage injury sustained during the third One-Day International against Australia.
He is currently under observation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The injury occurred when Iyer took a spectacular running catch to dismiss Alex Carey but appeared to hurt his left rib cage in the process.
Soon after returning to the dressing room, he reportedly fainted, prompting immediate medical attention.
According to team sources, scans revealed a laceration injury to the spleen, which led to internal bleeding.
“He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement on Monday.
The BCCI medical team, in coordination with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his condition.
The Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney to oversee Iyer’s recovery on a daily basis.

A source familiar with the situation said the 31-year-old cricketer has been in ICU for the past few days and will likely remain under observation for up to a week depending on recovery.
“After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been serious. He’s a strong lad and should be fine soon,” the source added.
While initial assessments suggested a three-week layoff, the extent of the internal injury may delay his return to competitive cricket. Iyer, who is not part of India’s T20 squad, will remain in Sydney until doctors declare him fit to travel back home.
