Aizawl: The Mizoram government is set to introduce the ‘Mizoram Firecrackers (Regulation & Control) Bill, 2025’ in the upcoming budget session to regulate the use of firecrackers during the festive season, an official said on Friday.
The decision was taken at a meeting of senior government officials, top police officers and representatives of civil society organisations, chaired by Home Minister K. Sapdanga on Thursday.
The meeting resolved that the Firecrackers (Regulation & Control) Bill would be tabled in the next budget session to curb the use of firecrackers, sky lanterns and other pyrotechnic materials.
The meeting also decided that government employees, security personnel, traders, members of the Young Mizo Association (YMA), church groups and online marketing agencies would be urged, through their respective departments and organisations, not to sell, purchase or use firecrackers during the festive period.
Mizoram has previously imposed bans on the use of firecrackers during festivals to reduce pollution and preserve the sanctity of Christmas and New Year celebrations.
As part of preparations for the festive season, the state administration has also announced traffic regulations in Aizawl. A ‘no-vehicle zone’ will be enforced along a three-kilometre stretch between Chanmari and Zodin Square—an area with major shopping centres—on December 23, 24 and 31, between 10.30 am and 4.30 pm.
