Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has expressed concern over the rising number of child abuse cases in the state.
During a meeting with members of the Mizoram State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR), the Chief Minister highlighted the need for the speedy disposal of such cases and stressed effective enforcement of children’s rights and freedoms, officials said.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Additional District and Sessions Judge Circuit Court in Serchhip, Lalduhoma said the scale of drug-related cases remains “very high,” especially in districts bordering Myanmar.
He noted that Serchhip is among the vulnerable areas used as a corridor for drug trafficking, prompting law enforcement agencies to step up efforts to tackle the problem.
The chief minister also drew attention to the alarming rise in child sexual abuse cases, underscoring the need for easily accessible judicial mechanisms. He said that establishing higher courts closer to affected communities would greatly strengthen the delivery of justice.
The state government had earlier notified the establishment of the Serchhip Circuit Court on November 25, 2024, placing it under the jurisdiction of the Additional District and Sessions Judge-II, Aizawl. However, its operationalisation was delayed due to manpower constraints and the lack of adequate courtroom infrastructure.

Although proceedings began in June this year through virtual hearings, the circuit court has now become fully operational following the completion of a dedicated courtroom, marking a significant step towards faster and more efficient judicial processes in the district.
