SHILLONG: In the wee hours of December 2, a fierce fire broke out at Bajoria Mill in Shillong’s Garikhana, engulfing the godown premises, triggering panic and concern among local residents.

The blaze, suspected to have originated from an electrical short circuit, was first noticed around 12:30 am and was raging for hours despite the relentless efforts of firefighting teams.

As of the latest update, there have been no reported casualties, and investigation is on to ascertain the actual cause of the incident.

The godown became a battleground for firefighters as they grappled to control the flames that threatened to spread to the neighbouring areas, including Magik Cook’s Campus.

Swift action was taken by multiple emergency response units, including Pulit Fire & Emergency Services, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the Army and District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO).

These teams arrived promptly on the scene to combat the blaze and prevent its escalation.

Eyewitnesses recounted the horror as flames illuminated the midnight sky, prompting residents to raise the alarm.

Local firefighting teams worked tirelessly, but the fire intensified the fears of those residing in the affected vicinity.

Authorities urged residents to stay vigilant, follow safety protocols, and cooperate with emergency services as they tried to contain the blaze.

Earlier on October 14, a devastating fire had broken out in a building at Police Bazar, resulting in the unfortunate loss of a life and the hospitalisation of a fire service constable due to suffocation.

The victim was identified as an employee at a rented godown in the area.

The victim, identified as an employee working at a rented godown in the vicinity, succumbed to the thick smoke generated by the fierce flames, the East Khasi Hills SP Sylvester Nongtynger had confirmed.

This is a developing story and updates on the situation will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
