Shillong: Police in East Khasi Hills have begun a detailed probe into the death of Bipul Inghi, a security guard posted at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), after questions were raised over the circumstances in which he died earlier this month.

The case has been registered as an unnatural death following a complaint filed by Inghi’s family at Mawlai Police Station.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said the police were formally alerted about the incident a few days after the death, based on inputs from Ri-Bhoi Police and the family.

According to preliminary information, Inghi suffered injuries after allegedly falling inside the NEHU campus on the evening of January 6.

He was taken to a private hospital in Shillong, where he died two days later on January 8.

Police said they are awaiting the post-mortem report from Ri-Bhoi district to establish the exact cause of death.

“The investigation is ongoing to determine what transpired inside the NEHU campus that night,” Syiem said, adding that the inquiry is being handled by the Mawkynroh Police Outpost.

The police have also sought the post-mortem findings from the Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police.

A decision on whether the case will remain an unnatural death or be reclassified as a murder will be taken after the medical report and other evidence are examined, officials said.

The family had earlier expressed concern after noticing injury marks and blood clots on Inghi’s body when it was brought home, leading them to seek a closer investigation.

However, they clarified that they do not have any direct suspicion against any individual, including hospital staff.

Family members have appealed to the authorities for a fair and comprehensive inquiry, saying they want clarity on whether the death was accidental or involved foul play.
