Shillong: The North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has suspended Professor Nirmalendu Saha, a senior faculty member, following his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a Rs. 3.43 lakh bribery case, officials confirmed on Friday.
Professor Saha, who heads the Zoology Department and serves as the Dean of the School of Life Sciences, was apprehended on June 12 alongside Pranjal Sharma, the proprietor of a private firm, during a bribery transaction at NEHU’s guest house in Guwahati.
A senior university official stated that the suspension was issued after receiving official communication from the CBI.
“The university acted in accordance with the rules upon receiving the formal intimation,” the official explained.
The official clarified that the delay in issuing the suspension order was due to the need for proper documentation from the investigating agency.
“Without the CBI’s official documentation, we could not proceed earlier,” the source added.
The CBI had registered an FIR on June 11 against Professor Saha and Sharma in connection with the alleged bribery scheme, which involved procurement of laboratory equipment.
