Shillong: Amid delays with the Byrnihat-Shillong railway project, a new proposal is gaining attention for a 180-kilometre rail line from Chaparmukh Junction in Assam to Jowai in Meghalaya.
This proposed line aims to significantly enhance regional connectivity and stimulate economic growth in the region.
One of the key highlights of this project is that it will provide Jowai with the first-ever direct rail link.
This connection promises to improve transportation, boost trade, and foster tourism in Meghalaya, benefiting both locals and visitors.
However, the railway projects in Meghalaya have faced opposition, particularly from influential pressure groups like the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU).
The KSU continues to voice concerns over the potential for unregulated migration, fearing that the new rail line could make it easier for outsiders to enter the state.
Many locals share these concerns and have joined the KSU in demanding stronger safeguards against such influxes before any railway development proceeds.

At the same time, the Byrnihat-Shillong railway project remains stalled, with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw warning that Rs. 200 crore allocated for the project could be reclaimed if land acquisition issues are not resolved soon.
This continued delay has sparked frustration, especially as the Mendipathar railway station, already operational, has not shown significant changes in migration patterns in the Garo Hills.
Despite these challenges, the Chaparmukh-Jowai rail link offers hope for positive change.
The proposed route would connect key towns such as Bhoksong, Rajagaon, Baithalangso, Jengkha, Kherani, and Umrangso, addressing existing transportation gaps and improving the flow of people and goods between Assam and Meghalaya.
