SHILLONG: The National Testing Agency (NTA) finds itself embroiled in controversy once again as Common University Entrance Test (CUET) examination proceedings at Meghalaya’s North-East Hill University (NEHU) caused uproar and frustration.

Education Minister Rakkam Sangma levied sharp criticism against the central agency, accusing it of gross unpreparedness in conducting the exams at NEHU, leading to chaotic scenes on Thursday.

Allegedly, the administration at CUET compelled students to suffer a nearly three-hour delay beyond the scheduled commencement time.

Minister Sangma highlighted the failure of coordination between NTA and state authorities, revealing that while the state government had made arrangements in schools for the exams, NTA proceeded with holding them at NEHU without prior communication.

“NTA’s lack of coordination left NEHU unprepared, worsening the situation. NEHU received last-minute directives, leaving insufficient time for adequate preparations,” Sangma told a Shillong-based news portal.

The Education Minister further disclosed concerning lapses in logistical support, highlighting a glaring shortfall in biometric machines, essential for exam security.

Despite inadequate resources, NTA allegedly proceeded with the examination, bypassing established protocols.

Expressing serious concern, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has vowed to escalate the matter with the Centre and NTA, prioritising the welfare of affected students.

“In response, we will advocate for affected CUET candidates to consider admission at NEHU or affiliated colleges, offering exemptions and second chances,” the Education Minister added.

This marks the second instance in as many weeks where NTA’s examination conduct in Meghalaya has been called into question.

Previously, discrepancies arose during the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test 2024 (NEET) exams in West Jaintia Hills’ Jowai and Ri Bhoi’s Nongpoh, where candidates reportedly received incorrect question papers.

Despite assurances from Chief Minister Sangma of raising concerns with the central agency, affected stakeholders await a formal response from NTA.

Concurrently, pressure groups and student unions in Meghalaya are rallying for re-examination amidst growing discontent over the irregularities.
