GUWAHATI: The Territorial Army (TA) began its Platinum Jubilee Year celebrations with a series of awareness programmes including a mass plantation drive at Sonitpur district.
The 134 Infantry Battalion (Ecological) of the Territorial Army, also known as the 134 Ecological Task Force (ETF), organised a plantation drive to observe National Endangered Species Day in the villages of Gamani, Satai, and Garobasti on Friday.
“This mass plantation drive is just the beginning of a series of events planned throughout the Platinum Jubilee Year to promote environmental awareness and sustainability,” said a spokesperson from the 134 ETF.
During the event, ETF personnel engaged with community members and children, highlighting the importance of protecting ecosystems, particularly the vulnerable and endangered species of flora and fauna.
They stressed that the success of any ecological mission depends on the active and wholehearted involvement of the local community.
“We remain committed to our mission of ecological restoration and community engagement, embodying the spirit of the Territorial Army’s dedication to national service and environmental stewardship,” added the spokesperson.
As a part of the celebrations of TA’s Platinum Jubilee (from 1949 to 2024), the 134 ETF launched a large-scale plantation drive, aiming to plant a total of 5000 fruit-bearing and shade-giving trees in local villages and schools.
This initiative witnessed enthusiastic participation from local villagers and school children, who joined hands to enhance the green cover of their areas.
The 134 ETF, established in 2007 in the Sonitpur District of Assam, was created to address rampant deforestation and to restore the region’s fragile ecological balance.
Since its inception, the unit has been instrumental in environmental conservation efforts across the Sonitpur and Biswanath districts.
As the Territorial Army continues its legacy of service, the 134 ETF’s efforts aim to foster a sense of responsibility towards preserving nature among the local population.
