The 832-bed Mother and Child Hospital at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) is set to become operational on March 2, marking a major expansion in healthcare aimed at strengthening maternal and neonatal services across the state.
The new facility has modern infrastructure and specialised care services, including dedicated maternity and neonatal care and a 152-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
The facility also features 38 treatment rooms, 17 pre- and post-operative beds, 20 high- and low-dependency beds for high-risk cases, and a 15-bed triage unit designed to handle both obstetric and paediatric emergencies. A dedicated Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre has also been established to deliver specialised care for mothers and infants.

To ensure sufficient service delivery, 258 specially trained nurses will be deployed in the new wing.
Inaugurating the unit last month, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “I also inaugurated the 832-bed Mother and Child Hospital, offering specialised care and reducing maternal mortality ratio (MMR) and infant mortality rate (IMR). This is truly a historic moment for us. Established in 1960, GMCH is set to undergo a complete overhaul, adding new facilities and expanding healthcare reach in Assam’s premier medical college. This will make it one of the largest medical colleges in the country offering the best of the services.”
