GUWAHATI: Litterateur Padma Shri Dhirendranath Bezbaruah will be conferred with the coveted Siu-Ka-Pha Award 2023 on the occasion of Asom Divas on December 2.
Addressing him as the “torch-bearer of English journalism” in the state, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made the announcement through a post in social media after a cabinet meeting at the Convention Centre, Tinsukia, on Friday.
“Heartiest congratulations to Shri Dhirendranath Bezbaruah, the Founder Editor of The Sentinel and the torchbearer of English journalism on being conferred with the prestigious Siu-Ka-Pha Award 2023 on the occasion of Asom Divas tomorrow,” read Chief Minister Sarma’s post.
Member of Parliament Queen Ohja also took to a social media website and congratulated the 89-year-old.
“Heartiest congratulations to Shri Dhirendranath Bezbaruah, the Founder Editor of The Sentinel on being conferred with the prestigious Siu-Ka-Pha Award 2023 on the occasion of Asom Divas tomorrow. My best wishes for future endeavours,” she wrote.
The BD Goenka Award for Journalism awardee is the founder editor of an English daily in Assam, The Sentinel, and has authored of several books on subjects concerning the state.
One of his translation works, The Cavern and Other Stories by Bhabendranath Saikia, is amongst the readers’ favourites.
Asom Divas, observed annually on December 2 is also recognized as Siu-Ka-Pha Divas, this celebration marks the arrival of the inaugural king of the Ahom kingdom in Assam.
