GUWAHATI: The Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati witnessed a remarkable surge in passenger traffic during 2023, handling approximately 5.6 million passengers, as disclosed by the Guwahati Airport Authority.

The statistics represent a notable growth of 17% compared to the previous year, which recorded around 4.6 million passengers in 2022.

The Chief Airport Officer (CAO), Utpal Baruah, expressed satisfaction over the noteworthy achievement, stressing that there was an increase of 10 lakh in passenger number.

He highlighted that the growth rate as one of the highest in the country, reaching 17%.

Despite operating in a terminal with less than half its passenger handling capacity, the airport managed to handle the increased volume efficiently.

“We are eagerly awaiting the commissioning of the new terminal this year, which boasts double the capacity of our current demand. With new connectivity to Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, and Bangkok, we are also actively working on introducing additional domestic and international destinations,” a national news daily quoted him as saying.

In terms of aircraft movement, Guwahati Airport handled about 46,600 flights in 2023, marking a substantial rise from the 41,000 recorded in the previous year.

Among these, approximately 23,300 arrivals and departures were reported.

The New Year brought expanded air connectivity to Guwahati with Jaipur and Bhubaneswar added to the list of domestic destinations.

Internationally, Bangkok emerged as the sole new connectivity for 2023.

Notably, December 24, 2023, witnessed the highest single-day passenger traffic, reaching 19,290 passengers, underlining the airport’s increasing significance as a major aviation hub in the region.
