Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday that 97 individuals have been arrested in the state in connection with anti-national and anti-Hindu activities following the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 people dead and several injured on April 22.

The latest arrests include one individual each from Tinsukia and Nagaon districts. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sarma stated, “Crackdown on anti-Hindu elements continues… 97 anti-national and anti-Hindu culprits behind bars now.”

According to the Chief Minister, the arrested person from Tinsukia shared objectionable content targeting Hinduism on social media, while the individual from Nagaon made derogatory remarks about Lord Ram.

The crackdown gained momentum after the arrest of AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam on sedition charges.

Islam was accused of defending Pakistan and its involvement in the Pahalgam attack. Although granted bail, he was subsequently detained under the National Security Act (NSA).

The Chief Minister has taken a hardline stance against anti-national activities.

On May 2, during a panchayat election rally, Sarma warned that anyone raising slogans such as “Pakistan Zindabad” would face severe consequences, including the threat of “breaking their legs.”

The Pahalgam attack, targeting a popular tourist destination in south Kashmir, claimed the lives of 26 people, primarily tourists, and injured several others.

Security agencies continue their investigations into the attack, as Assam intensifies efforts to counter individuals allegedly promoting divisive agendas within the state.
