Guwahati: Sleuths of the Crime Branch of Assam Police have busted a fake death certificate racket, which has swindled huge amount of money from different life insurance companies.
Sources said the Crime Branch, on Thursday, conducted raid at several places in Guwahati and few places in Nalbari and Barpeta districts. Nine people have been arrested.
Members of the fake death certificate gang were arrested from Paltan Bazar and Hatigaon in Guwahati city, Mukalmua in Nalbari and another place in Barpeta district.
Several incriminating documents have also been seized from the hideouts of the arrested fake death certificate racket, the sources said.
The sleuths of the Crime Branch are now examining the documents and are corroborating them with the initial statements of the members of the fake death certificate racket.
From prima facie investigations, it has come to fore than the members of the fake death certificate racket could manage to dupe several banks and insurance companies, including the ICICI Bank and the Axis Bank.
The gang has been meticulously carrying out the fraudulence with connivance of village headmen and ASHA workers, the sources said.
The members of the gang reportedly confessed that at first they buy insurance policies in different peoples’ names, and later withdraw the insurance money producing fake death certificates.
Involvement of the officials of insurance companies in the racket also cannot be ruled out, the officials said.
