Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is on a construction spree of medical colleges in the state.

During the last 72 hours, the Assam chief minister laid foundation of three medical colleges. Sarma plans to set up a total of 25 government medical colleges in Assam by the end of 2026.

At present, Assam has nine government medical colleges, including an AIIMS.

On Tuesday, Sarma said foundation for a 200-bed hospital and medical college in Bongaigaon, built at an estimated cost of Rs 610 crore.

On Wednesday, the Assam chief minister attended the Bhumi Pujan of the proposed medical college and hospital, to be constructed at a cost of Rs 686 crore at Kosubari in Tamulpur district.

On Thursday, the Assam chief minister laid foundation for 430-bed Morigaon Medical College and Hospital. Estimated cost of the new medical college in Morigaon is Rs 647.37 crore.

On Day-4 of ‘Fortnight for development’, laid foundation stones for 12 new projects in Morigaon district worth ₹910.13 cr.

If Himanta Biswa Sarma succeeds in making 25 medical colleges operational by the end of his tenure in 2026, Assam with 3.12 crore population, will have highest density of medical colleges in India.
