The chief minister made the announcement after meeting Toshiaki Nishikawa, chairman of Asean One,  a Japan-based recruitment agency, at his office in Guwahati on Monday.

The Japanese Language Centre in Assam, which is located in Guwahati, aims to provide Japanese language skills to Assamese youth for potential work opportunities in Japan.

The initiative, he said, will further strengthen cultural and educational ties between Assam and Japan, providing students with access to global opportunities and exposure to Japanese work ethics and culture.

CM Sarma and Nishikawa first met in May 2025 to discuss setting up the Japanese language centre. Sarma stated that the project was implemented within just five months of its conception.

The initiative is part of a broader partnership with ASEAN One, which also has a similar arrangement with Meghalaya.
