IMPHAL: A deadly gunfight between armed militants and security forces in Moreh, Manipur, claimed the life of another Manipur Police commando on Thursday, injuring six personnel in the process.

This marks the second fatality among security personnel within the past 24 hours in the town.

The deceased, identified as Takhellambam Sieleshwor Singh, was a member of the 10th Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) from Imphal West, a social media post by Manipur Police reealed on Thursday.

The incident follows the loss of another Manipur Police commando, Wangkhem Somorjit Meetei, on January 17.

Meetei had lost his life in a gunfight initiated by a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) attack on a security forces camp in Moreh.

Additionally, the six police personnel sustained injuries in the attack were identified as Md. Kamal Hassan, Songsuathui Aimol, Md. Abdul Hasim, Ngasepam Vim, ASI Sidarth Thokchom, and K Premananda.

According to a social media post, the attack occurred in the early hours of January 17 in Moreh, Tengnoupal district, when armed militants, wielding firearms and explosives, launched a violent assault on the state forces.

Simultaneously, in another incident in Thoubal district, members of the Border Security Force (BSF) faced aggression from an irate mob in Khangabok.

Security forces, responding with the minimum necessary force, repelled the mob, preventing them from breaching Thoubal Police Headquarters.

Unfortunately, three BSF personnel, namely Constable Gourav Kumar, ASI Sobram Singh, and ASI Ramji, sustained bullet injuries during the clash.

The injured security personnel were swiftly evacuated to Raj Medicity for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, the Manipur government, responding to the ongoing clashes between state police commandos and armed miscreants in Moreh, has urgently sought “air assets” or helicopters from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

In a letter penned by T. Ranjit Singh, Commissioner (Home), Manipur, the state highlighted the gravity of the situation and urged the Centre to address the matter promptly.

Simultaneously, in the Imphal West district, a large group of women from Malom staged a protest against the killing of Wangkhem Somorjit Meetei by blocking the road to the airport.

Clad in traditional mourning attire, the women positioned themselves in the middle of the road, halting all vehicular movement to express their outrage over the killing of policemen in Moreh.
