Bangladesh’s newly appointed chief of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), Major General Kaisar Rashid Chowdhury, today flew to New Delhi, marking the first such visit by a high-ranking Army officer and head of the country’s premier intelligence agency.
Maj Gen Chowdhury and his spouse took an Indigo Airlines flight (6E-1104) for the Indian capital where he will be for the next “two-three” days and ostensibly undergo medical treatment.
This marks the first India visit by a DGFI chief in recent years.
Maj Gen Chowdhury was promoted from a Brigadier in the most recent shake-up within the Bangladesh Army after the BNP-led government headed by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman assumed official charge on February 17.
The intensive and extensive transfers and postings in the higher echelons of the Army saw the removal of Principal Staff Officer in the Armed Forces Division (which is under the Prime Minister’s Office) Lieutenant General S M Kamrul Hassan.

Lt Gen Kamrul Hassan was moved to a senior assignment at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Another senior officer, Lt Gen Mohammad Shahinul Huque, who was the Commandant of the Dhaka-based National Defence College, was appointed as the Quarter Master General, while Lt Gen Mainur Rahman, considered to close to Army chief Gen Waker-uz-Zaman, was appointed as the Chief of General Staff, a key assignment for more reasons than one.
Several other senior officers were moved from their command positions, especially in the 19th, 24th and 66th Infantry Divisions, to less significant posts.
The transfers and postings also included moving out Lt Gen Faizur Rahman, the Quarter Master General, to head the NDC.
