A media delegation from Karnataka visited Umden Diwon Silk Village in Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya, known for its rich tradition of silk weaving and community-based craftsmanship.
The visit comes as part of a Press Tour organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Government of India.
The Umden Diwon Silk Village village is widely known for producing Eri Silk, locally called Ryndai, which has recently been awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, recognising its unique regional identity.
Eri silk is an ahimsa (non-violent) silk, harvested without killing the silkworms, making it an environmentally sustainable and ethically produced textile.
The village showcased its environmentally sustainable and ethically produced textiles to the delegation.

The visit also highlighted the role of women-led Self Help Groups in preserving traditional weaving techniques and promoting sustainable livelihoods. Members of women-led Self Help Groups (SHGs) shared their experiences of building sustainable livelihoods through collective efforts.
During the visit, the journalists interacted closely with local artisans, particularly women weavers, and witnessed the entire silk-making process, from silkworm rearing and spinning to dyeing and handloom weaving.
The artisans showcased the use of natural dyes extracted from local plants and organic materials, which give Eri silk its distinctive earthy hues while ensuring an eco-friendly, chemical-free production process.
Meanwhile, the media delegation also visited the Directorate General Assam Rifles (DGAR) at Laitkor. Officials briefed journalists on the history, role and operational responsibilities of the Assam Rifles in the Northeast.
The visit added significance following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reference to Meghalaya’s Eri Silk in the 123rd episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’, where he highlighted India’s diverse arts and crafts.
