Guwahati: The Superintendent of Guwahati Central Jail, Deb Kamal Baruah, has been arrested in connection with an alleged racket involving the supply of illegal substances inside the prison, police officials said.
The arrest was carried out by the Basistha Police following an FIR lodged by jail authorities.
As part of the investigation, two police personnel posted at the jail — Konkan Bora and Debajit Das — were also taken into custody on Wednesday. Police said illegal substances were recovered from the possession of two police personnel during the operation.
An inquiry was initiated after jail authorities lodged a complaint a few days ago over the easy availability of drugs and liquor inside the jail. According to police, they allegedly provided drugs and liquor to inmates in exchange for money.
Police said the case has highlighted major lapses in security and internal monitoring at the central jail. Investigators are continuing their probe to determine the full scope of the alleged illegal activities and to identify other possible suspects.
Meanwhile, the jail authorities have also stepped up internal checks and surveillance following the incident to prevent any further breaches of security and to curb the supply of contraband inside the prison.
