Guwahati: Two Assam Police personnel were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly supplying drugs and liquor to inmates of the Guwahati Central Jail, a senior police officer said.
The arrests followed a complaint lodged a few days ago regarding the easy availability of drugs and liquor inside the jail, after which an inquiry was initiated.
“We found the involvement of the two jawans and arrested them this morning,” the officer said.
According to police, the two personnel allegedly provided drugs and liquor to inmates in exchange for money. The accused belong to the 4th Assam Police Battalion and were posted at Guwahati Central Jail.
Police said further investigation is underway to determine whether more people are involved in the network.
Senior officials said departmental action will also be initiated against the two personnel in addition to the criminal case, and strict disciplinary measures are likely to follow as per service rules.
