Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has said the state government is stepping up efforts to accelerate the exploration of natural gas and oil, while also focusing on tapping the state’s green energy potential.

Speaking after inaugurating ‘Oil & Gas Conservation Awareness Fortnight SAKSHAM 2025–26’ at Mizofed Petrol Pump in Aizawl on Monday, Lalduhoma said the government is actively following up on hydrocarbon exploration to ensure faster progress.

“We are continuing to pursue the exploration of oil and gas beneath the ground in Mizoram to ensure the work is carried out more rapidly. At the same time, we are actively working on opportunities for progress in the field of green energy,” the chief minister said.

Emphasising the theme “Conserve Oil, Go Green,” he called for judicious use of non-renewable resources for a sustainable future.

Highlighting India’s energy vulnerability, he noted that the country remains the world’s third-largest consumer of oil and gas and imports nearly 80 per cent of its requirements. He warned that overconsumption depletes non-renewable resources and contributes to air pollution through carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide emissions.

“Conserving oil today is an investment in our children’s future,” Lalduhoma said, urging people to use fuel judiciously to safeguard both the economy and the environment.

The chief minister also said that domestic gas pipeline connectivity for Aizawl is progressing, with construction work extending from Tripura.

Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister B Lalchhanzova, who also attended the event, said the government is committed to ensuring an uninterrupted gas supply in the state.

He said a gas bottling plant at Mualkhang near Aizawl is being upgraded, and efforts are also underway to establish an oil depot.

Mizoram currently has 60 LPG distributors and 115 petrol pumps, with over 4.22 lakh vehicles registered across the state.
