Tura: The Meghalaya Koch Students’ Union (MKSU) observed the 516th birth anniversary of Vishwa Mahavir Chilarai (Shukladhwaj Koch) with a commemorative programme held at Chandobhui in West Garo Hills on Sunday. The event highlighted the life, valour, and enduring legacy of the legendary commander of the Koch Kingdom.

The programme focused on Mahavir Chilarai’s role as the Commander-in-Chief and Chief Minister (Dewan) of the Koch Dynasty, his military brilliance, and his humane governance. Speakers recalled that Shukladhwaj Koch (1510–1577 AD), the third son of Biswa Singha, founder of the Koch Dynasty in the Kamata Kingdom, and younger brother of Maharaja Nara Narayan, earned the name “Chilarai” for his lightning-fast military campaigns, likened to the speed of an eagle (chila). His patronage was also credited with enabling Srimanta Sankardeva to establish the Ekasarana-namadharma, ushering in a cultural renaissance in Assam.

Addressing the gathering, Kandarpa Koch, President of MKSU, delivered a brief introduction on the life and contributions of Mahavir Chilarai, emphasizing his leadership in strengthening the Koch Kingdom and his respect for common people and surrendered rulers. The welcome address was delivered by Bhobani Koch, Gaonbura of Chandobhui.

Short speeches were presented by Bhomik Koch, Assistant General Secretary, MKSU, who spoke on the relevance of Mahavir Chilarai’s leadership in contemporary times. A special address by 7-year-old Ashmita Koch on the life of Mahavir Chilarai drew wide appreciation. Raghunath Koch, General Secretary, MKSU Dalu Zone, recited a poem dedicated to the legendary warrior.

Further reflections on the historical and cultural significance of Mahavir Chilarai were shared by Nobo Koch, General Secretary, MKSU; Nilendu Koch, Vice President, MKSU; and Dipu Koch, Organising Secretary, MKSU. The cultural segment featured a Koch song performed by Nepolean Koch, Cultural Secretary, MKSU, showcasing traditional heritage.

The programme also included speeches by Urdhov Koch, President, MKSU Tura Branch, Bibeka Koch of Koch Krorang Mathop (KKM), and Jibanando Koch, President of the Meghalaya Koch Association (MKA), who attended as the special guest. They stressed the need to preserve Koch history and inspire younger generations through such commemorations.
