Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said the Meghalaya government is intensifying efforts to complete the remaining stretches of fencing along the international border with Bangladesh, with the Centre also closely monitoring the progress.
Addressing reporters, Sangma said the state was moving “very aggressively” on the issue and expressed hope that the pending work would be completed soon.
He said multiple challenges had delayed the project, including population-related concerns, land acquisition issues and ongoing court cases.
According to the Chief Minister, around 40 km of the nearly 440-km-long border fencing remains incomplete, with the West Jaintia Hills sector accounting for the largest unfenced stretch.

He noted that legal disputes in some areas have slowed down the work but assured that necessary steps are being taken to resolve them.
Sangma underlined that border security remains a priority for the state, adding that the Meghalaya government, along with the Border Security Force (BSF) and other agencies, is maintaining heightened vigilance along the international boundary.
He also referred to a high-level review meeting held on December 24, 2025, which was attended by officials from various agencies, including the BSF and the Intelligence Bureau, to assess the border situation and strengthen coordination on security measures.
