Agartala: The family of Anjel Chakma, a young MBA student from Tripura who was killed in Dehradun last month, has demanded a CBI investigation into his death, alleging that the attack was racially motivated.
Anjel, a resident of the Pecharthal area in North Tripura district, died following a violent assault on December 9.
His father, Tarun Kanti Chakma, a BSF jawan currently posted in Manipur, said the family has received little clarity on the progress of the investigation even a month after the incident.
On Monday, Chakma met Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Debbarma in Agartala to seek support for a central probe.
He said the family had been informed that five people were arrested in connection with the case, but alleged that the prime accused remains absconding.
“We want a CBI probe to ensure a fair and speedy investigation,” he said, adding that he has also requested a posting in Delhi to pursue the case more effectively.
Chakma said Debbarma assured him of full support in the fight for justice.

The Tipra Motha leader, in turn, said he has been in constant touch with Anjel’s family since the incident occurred in Dehradun.
Debbarma criticised the delay in the police response, claiming that the FIR was registered three days after the attack despite the severity of the crime.
Calling Anjel’s killing a disturbing example of racial violence, he said such incidents must be confronted collectively, beyond political affiliations.
“The country does not belong only to people who look alike,” Debbarma said, asserting that he would do everything possible to ensure justice for the family and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
