Itanagar: The scenic town of Mechukha in Arunachal Pradesh’s Shi Yomi district will host the Asian qualifiers for the 2027 Adventure Racing World Championship (ARWC), Tourism Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona announced on Tuesday.
The ‘Adventure@Mechukha 2026’ race, scheduled for November next year, will traverse the districts of Shi Yomi, Siang and West Siang.
Calling it a major milestone for both Arunachal Pradesh and India, Sona said the event positions the state prominently on the global adventure racing map. He said Adventure Racing World Series (ARWS) enjoys a strong fan base across the globe, with thousands of adventure athletes and enthusiasts travelling worldwide for the races.
“Hosting the ARWS qualifier gives Arunachal a unique opportunity to attract adventure tourists seeking untouched landscapes and authentic cultural experiences,” Sona said.
The minister, who represents Mechukha in the legislative assembly, highlighted that the region’s pristine wilderness and vibrant indigenous culture make it an ideal venue for high-endurance adventure racing. The event is expected to attract elite international teams and adventure travellers.
Sona credited Mechukha’s growing recognition to its successful organisation of the 3rd National Adventure Racing Championship 2025, which introduced many locals to the multi-discipline sport involving trail running, mountain biking, kayaking and orienteering.
Describing the ARWS qualifier as one of the world’s toughest team endurance events, he said it will bring global standards of navigation, survival skills, endurance and teamwork to the remote frontier district.
The upcoming race, Sona added, will also draw influencers, filmmakers and sports journalists, helping showcase Mechukha’s landscapes and culture to a wider audience and boosting long-term tourism.
