New Delhi: An IndiGo flight from Kuwait to Hyderabad was forced to divert to Mumbai early Tuesday after authorities at Hyderabad Airport received an email claiming a bomb was onboard, officials said.

The Airbus operating as flight 6E1234, with 228 passengers and six crew members, made an emergency landing at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport around 6.30 am.

Ahead of its arrival, the airport activated its full emergency protocol, deploying security personnel, bomb disposal units and fire teams to an isolation bay.

Airport officials said Air Traffic Control was alerted to the threat in the early hours and coordinated with IndiGo and security agencies to divert the aircraft.

The airline is yet to issue a formal statement.

The scare comes amid a spike in hoax threats targeting public spaces, including airports and schools.

On Monday, a private school in Mira Road, Thane district, received a bomb threat via email, prompting a search that later confirmed it was a false alarm.

A similar incident occurred on November 23 when a Bahrain–Hyderabad flight was rerouted to Mumbai after authorities at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport received a threat message, which was later declared a hoax.

Earlier this year, on May 7, Mumbai’s Sahar Airport hotline received a call warning of an explosive on an IndiGo flight operating from Chandigarh to Mumbai, days after India conducted strikes on terror camps across the border.

The aircraft was taken to an isolation bay, passengers were evacuated safely and extensive security checks were carried out before the alert was deemed false.

Authorities are investigating the latest threat and further details are awaited.
