Guwahati: Assam is set to get a new state-of-the-art cricket stadium, with Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma scheduled to inaugurate the Assam Cricket Association’s (ACA) newly built facility in Umrangso on December 5.
The picturesque hill town in Dima Hasao, known for its natural beauty, now features a modern cricket stadium designed and constructed without disturbing the region’s ecological balance—on par with venues in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and England.
BCCI General Secretary Devajit Saikia, who recently inspected the site, said North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member Debolal Garlosa had allotted 30 bighas of land for the project. Earlier, the ACA explored options in Haflong, but the lack of suitable land led to Umrangso being chosen.
Saikia said the ACA conceptualised the stadium four years ago, and construction is now complete. The new facility includes gallery seating for 15,000 spectators and five practice pitches. He confirmed that both the BCCI and ACA will host domestic cricket matches at the stadium, with the aim of developing it into a premier destination for players from across the country.
He added that cricket activities in the district were previously limited to a football ground in Haflong, but the new stadium will now provide a full-fledged platform for emerging cricketers.
Saikia expressed confidence that young talent from Dima Hasao will rise through the ranks in the coming years.

Built with support from the Umrangso Sports Association, the stadium’s pavilion has been named after Chingia Tularam Senapati.
The inauguration ceremony will be held at 2 pm on December 5 in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Dima Hasao Autonomous Council CEM Debolal Garlosa.
