Kohima: Nagaland Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma on Tuesday led the state in paying tributes to 186 police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty across the country over the past year.
Speaking at the Police Commemoration Day ceremony held at the Nagaland Police headquarters, Sharma urged officers to reaffirm their dedication to national service and to remain steadfast in their duty, even at the cost of personal sacrifice.
“Let us renew our pledge to serve our people, safeguard the integrity of our nation, and be prepared to make the supreme sacrifice when the situation demands,” he said in his address.
From September 2024 to August 2025, 186 police personnel across India laid down their lives while performing their duties — among them was Constable Chandan Das of the 9th NAP (IR) Battalion from Nagaland.
Reflecting on the significance of the day, Sharma recalled that Police Commemoration Day traces its origins to the 1959 Aksai Chin incident, where ten CRPF jawans were martyred during an ambush by Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Ladakh.
Their bravery led to October 21 being observed annually as a day of remembrance for all policemen who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Paying respects alongside senior officers, DGP Sharma laid wreaths at the cenotaph and lauded the professionalism and dedication of the Nagaland Police, which he said continues to uphold public trust and bring honour to the force.
“Today is not just a day of remembrance but also of pride — a celebration of the courage and devotion that define our police force,” Sharma remarked, calling on personnel to carry forward the legacy of those who died in service.
The ceremony concluded with a roll call of honour for the 186 fallen personnel, read out by AIGP Rangkathung Vikram Ezung.
