Shillong/New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested three officials of the Postal Department, including an Assistant Branch Post Master, in connection with a bribery case in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills district.
Those arrested have been identified as Adarsh Kumar, Assistant Branch Post Master; N. Hemanta Meitai, Sub-Divisional Inspector; and Arjun Reang, a postman attached to the Rongjeng Sub-Post Office in Williamnagar.
The CBI said the arrests followed a complaint lodged by a Gram Dak Sevak from the Rongjeng Sub-Office, who alleged that the trio had demanded a bribe equivalent to two months of his salary in exchange for releasing his pending pay, which had been withheld for nearly ten months.
After negotiations, the accused reportedly agreed to accept Rs 30,000 and instructed the complainant to pay the amount once his salary was credited.

Acting on the complaint, CBI sleuths laid a trap and caught Adarsh Kumar red-handed while accepting the Rs 30,000 bribe.
Following his arrest, the other two accused — Meitai and Reang — were detained from Shillong and Ambassa in Tripura’s Dhalai district, respectively.
Subsequent searches at their offices and residences in Williamnagar and Tripura’s Upanagar village led to the recovery of Rs 2.3 lakh in cash and several incriminating documents, officials said.
The arrested officials will be produced before the appropriate court, while further investigation into the case is underway.
