Shillong: The Silent Beauty Below, a documentary directed by Senggai G. Momin from South Garo Hills in Meghalaya, has won the First Prize for Best Educational and Conservation Documentary Film at the 51st National Speleological Congress held in Romania on September 28.
Momin, a member of the Core Geo Expedition team, created the documentary during the team’s cave research in Garo Hills as part of his Green Hub Fellowship.
The film showcases the intricate beauty of underground cave ecosystems while emphasising the urgent need for conservation through education and awareness.
Edited by Senggai Momin and Manisha Halai, with cinematography by Momin and Banyllashisha Wankhar, the project was guided by mentors Sumit Sisodiya and Amar Maibam.

The collaborative effort reflects the Core Geo Expedition’s commitment to environmental stewardship and passion for cave exploration.
Momin has been actively associated with Baghmara Campers, documenting and sharing the hidden wonders of the Garo Hills.
Celebrating his achievement on social media, Momin wrote, “I never expected to reach this stage — receiving an award at the National Caving Congress in Romania feels truly surreal. Grateful to everyone who supported this journey.”
