Imphal: A major tragedy was averted in Manipur after security forces recovered and safely destroyed two powerful improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Jiribam district on Sunday night, officials said on Monday.
Acting on intelligence inputs, personnel of the Assam Rifles conducted a search operation in Makha Basti near the state’s border with Assam’s Cachar district on Sunday.
“Two IEDs weighing 12 kg along with three electric power sources, and 12 metre of detonation cord were recovered,” an officer said.
A bomb disposal team promptly destroyed the IEDs on the spot, ensuring public safety.
Security forces on Sunday (October 6) arrested an active cadre of the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group), identified as Rajkumar Sanathoi Singh (18), from his residence at Naoremthong Laishram Leirak in Imphal West district.
According to police, Singh was involved in extorting money from shops, business establishments, and the public in the valley area.
During the operation, the forces recovered one .32 pistol with a magazine and a mobile handset from his possession.
Meanwhile, Manipur Police on Sunday arrested two persons for their alleged involvement in extorting money from vehicles plying along National Highway-2 near Keinou Bazar under Bishnupur police station in Bishnupur district.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Sarangthem Dinesh Singh (29) of Nambol Oinam Awang Leikai and Khundrakpam Mohen Singh (25) of Keinou Thongthak Mongkhang Leikai, both from Bishnupur district.
Police recovered a two-wheeler and a mobile phone with a SIM card from their possession.
