Shillong: Tragedy struck Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district on Friday when a goods vehicle overturned after hitting a group of pedestrians, killing four teenage girls and injuring three others, police said.
The incident occurred in Thadrang village near the Mawlasnai police outpost.
The dumper, travelling from Jowai in West Jaintia Hills to Bhoirymbong, struck the girls while they were walking, causing the vehicle to overturn.
Three of the victims died instantly, while a fourth succumbed to her injuries later, authorities said.

The deceased have been identified as 13-year-olds Phibanpyntngen Rynjah, Lashimti Nongrum, Ridahunlang Nongrum, and 19-year-old Theresa Nongrum, all residents of Thadrang Madan Lyngbah village under Umiam police station.
One girl from the group sustained critical injuries, while the driver and helper of the vehicle were also hurt.
The bodies were released to the families after post-mortem examinations.
Police have seized the vehicle and registered a case in connection with the accident.
