New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Assam Director General of Police over the alleged assault of a journalist near Lumding Railway Institute earlier this month.
According to reports, the incident took place around midnight on September 7 when the media professional was returning home after work.
He was allegedly attacked and grievously injured by a group of miscreants before being rescued by police and taken to a hospital.
Condemning the attack, the Lumding Press Club and local residents demanded strict action against the culprits and greater security measures for journalists.
Taking suo motu cognisance of the incident based on a media report published on September 9, the NHRC observed that if true, the attack amounted to a serious violation of human rights.
The rights body has directed the Assam DGP to submit a detailed report within two weeks.
The victim has reportedly raised concerns about his safety and urged authorities to register a case against those involved to ensure justice.
