Agartala: With a view to boosting tourism, the Tripura government has planned to build six eco parks across the state.

Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma on Wednesday said that the eco parks would be developed in six districts, including Dhalai and South Tripura, with an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore for each park.

The new eco parks, which will be built on forest land and managed by the Joint Forest Management Group (JFMG), are expected to provide jobs and income for local communities through tourism.

“These tourist facilities, to be built on forest land, will provide a livelihood to the local people,” he said.

Debbarma said the department is focused on the creation of assets by utilising the outlay of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Notably, Chief Minister Manik Saha has been working on a mission to create world-class tourism-related infrastructure in the northeastern state.

Debbarma said, “The department plans to establish roadside market centres and forest producers’ outlets to provide decent facilities to the people who sell agricultural products on roadsides.”

The forest minister said the department would spend Rs 120 crore under JICA and Indo-German Development Project (IGDC), both externally-aided schemes, to set up roadside markets and forest producers’ centres.

According to the minister, 11 forest producers’ outlets will be established in 11 blocks of Dhalai district, with an allocation of Rs 50 lakh for each outlet.

“These facilities will be built for long-term use. These will help people, especially tribal communities, to sell their agricultural produce at fair prices,” he added.
