Shillong: Meghalaya BJP cabinet minister A.L. Hek has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking his intervention in the release of two Catholic nuns from Kerala who have been jailed in Chhattisgarh.
In his letter to Shah stated, “With deep humility and utmost reverence, I appeal to your good office to kindly intervene and prevent the heart-breaking attacks on Christians in Chhattisgarh.”
Referring to a recent video in which a woman named Jyoti Sharma is seen acting as a law enforcement agency, checking bags and threatening the nuns, and even slapping a pastor in full public view while police allegedly remained passive, Hek said the actions had “deeply hurt the sentiments of the peaceful Christian society across the nation.”
Hek further stated that he had spoken to the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and followed it up with a letter dated July 29, requesting the immediate release of the two nuns.
“We request your personal intervention in securing the release of the two Catholic nuns who have been jailed in Chattisgarh and action against Jyoti Sharma for her behaviour, who has brought shame to crores of peace-loving Hindu communities in our beloved country,” he added.
Earlier, the Meghalaya cabinet minister wrote to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, requesting the immediate release of the two nuns from Kerala who were arrested on July 25 at Durg Railway Station.
The arrest was based on an FIR lodged by the Bajrang Dal, alleging human trafficking and forced religious conversion.
In his letter, AL Hek expressed concern over the arrest and requested the chief minister to take appropriate steps to investigate the matter.
“As per telephonic discussion I had with you regarding the recent arrest of the two Nuns, I would like to request you and your good office for immediate release of the two Nuns who were arrested from Durg Railway Station on 25 July, 2025 based on the FIR lodged by the Bajrang Dal,” he wrote.
