Agartala: Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to implement a voter roll revision in Tripura similar to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) being carried out in Bihar ahead of its upcoming Assembly elections.

In a social media post on Sunday, Debbarma questioned why similar scrutiny is not being applied in northeastern states, particularly Tripura, where elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) are due in 2026, ahead of the state Assembly elections scheduled for 2028.

Sharing a photograph of Bihar poll officials verifying voter details, Debbarma wrote, “The same exercise should be conducted in Northeast India — especially Tripura — and the officers must include our indigenous Tiprasa people/officers.”

The Bihar model of voter roll revision has sparked controversy in the state, with opposition parties alleging excessive stringency in voter verification processes.

Debbarma argued that if such a rigorous process can be undertaken in Bihar, there’s no reason why it should not be extended to other parts of the country.

“I fail to understand why Bihar is important and the Northeast is not for the Election Commission. Aren’t we also children of India?” Debbarma posted, adding that it was time for Tipra Motha legislators to write to the EC demanding similar electoral oversight in Tripura.

He further called on people across the Northeast to exert pressure on regional political parties to support such a demand.

“I request all our Northeastern brothers and sisters to put the same pressure on your regional parties to do the same,” he appealed.

Debbarma has consistently advocated for greater representation and protection of indigenous communities in electoral and administrative processes in Tripura and beyond.

His latest statement adds momentum to ongoing debates around voter inclusion and the accuracy of electoral rolls in the region.
