Shillong: Senior United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Jemino Mawthoh has resigned from the party and as the honorary adviser to the Meghalaya government.
In his resignation letter addressed to UDP President Metbah Lyngdoh, Mawthoh said he tendered his resignation as a member of the party and also relinquished his post as general secretary with immediate effect due to unavoidable circumstances.
Dr. Mawthoh, who joined the UDP in 2014 and was soon after made its working president, expressed gratitude for the trust and opportunities given to him over the years.
“I am privileged to serve the party as a legislator, working president from 2014, and as general secretary from 2016 to date. I want to express my sincere thanks for the opportunities that the Party has given me all these years to serve the people of my Constituency and the State,” he wrote.
He said, “This decision is purely personal, and I strongly hold my ground on this matter.”
Mawthoh also stepped down from his position as the honorary adviser to the state Planning, Investment Promotion, and Sustainable Development Department, severing ties both at the party and administrative level.
Expressing his sincere thanks for the opportunities that the UDP has given all those years to serve the people of his Nongthymmai assembly constituency, the senior leader also acknowledged the support of his fellow co-workers during his tenure in various capacities in the UDP.
With Mawthoh’s resignation, the UDP, an ally of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), has suffered a significant political blow.
However, speculation is rife within political circles that he may be planning to join a different party.
Amidst the political stir caused by Jemino Mawthoh’s resignation from the UDP, the State BJP has said that it will warmly welcome the veteran politician, describing his experience and insight as valuable assets.
BJP chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang clarified that while no official talks have taken place so far, the party remains open to his induction.

“There has been no discussion, but of course, the BJP embraces anyone who wishes to join our party. If Jemino Mawthoh comes on board, he will be an asset to us with his expertise and knowledge. Whatever he brings will strengthen our party. Our doors are always open,” Kharkrang stated.
