According to officials, the landslides struck around 10:30 p.m. on Friday (May 30, 2025), collapsing the houses and hotel in the Bazar Veng and Chandmary border areas of Lawngtlai.

Several people were feared dead after five houses and a hotel collapsed due to landslides triggered by heavy rain in south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai town, officials said.

The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Friday (May 30, 2025) in the border area of Bazar Veng and Chandmary localities in Lawngtlai when the landslides struck the houses and the hotel, they said.

Several people from Myanmar, who were staying at the hotel, were believed to be trapped under the debris, the officials said.

As per reports, rescue operation is being carried out by personnel of the State Disaster Response Force (SRDF) and 3rd Indian Reserve Battalion along with volunteers of Young Lai Association (YLA), the largest civil society organisation in Lawngtlai district.

A 37-year-old man died after being buried under a collapsed stone retaining wall in the Thuampui area, on the northern outskirts of Aizawl, on Friday morning.

His companion also sustained serious injuries in the incident, which occurred amid severe monsoon rains and strong winds that caused widespread destruction across the state.

An Assam-type building was swept away by a landslide at Mauchar village in Aizawl district, near the border with Assam and Manipur. However, no casualties have been reported.

Landslides also damaged two houses in the Mamit district and one in Champhai town, though no fatalities were reported in these incidents.

As per reports, a wooden bridge over the Tisopi River in Siaha district was washed away by floods, and a landslide blocked a national highway at Sangau, near the Cheru River, in Lawngtlai district.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) across Mizoram from May 29 to June 1, 2025, due to a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal moving northeast.

In the past two days, Lawngtlai district recorded 112.50 mm of rainfall, followed by Serchhip (70 mm), Kolasib (63.70 mm), and Aizawl (63.60 mm).
