Gangtok: Search and rescue efforts have been stepped up in West Sikkim’s Gyalshing district for a 31-year-old tourist from West Bengal who went missing while trekking along the challenging Goechala trail, officials said on Thursday.
The missing individual, Sandeepan Roy, was part of a group of seven tourists accompanied by a guide.
The group began their trek on April 19, but Roy was reported missing on April 21 after the group reached an area near Tahgshing.
Initial search efforts were launched by Sikkim Police, forest department officials, and local volunteers.
However, with no breakthrough, the operation has since expanded with the deployment of specialised teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), and additional police personnel.
Recognising the difficulty of the rugged terrain, rescue teams have been equipped with satellite phones and VHF wireless systems to maintain communication in the remote region.
The multi-agency operation is being closely monitored by Gyalshing District Superintendent of Police, Tshering Sherpa, as efforts continue to trace Roy’s whereabouts.
