Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has carried out its first-ever drone-assisted cleaning operation at Assam’s Kamakhya Railway Station, officials announced on Sunday.
Conducted as a pilot project, the innovative demonstration focused on cleaning high-rise and hard-to-reach areas within the station premises, including rooftops and the exteriors of train coaches.
The use of drones showcased their effectiveness in improving hygiene standards and operational efficiency, according to NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma.
Key areas covered in the trial included the Kamakhya coaching depot sick line, the under-floor wheel lathe shed, the station’s exterior dome, and several train coaches.
“This operation highlighted the precision and accessibility offered by drone technology in maintaining elevated infrastructure,” Sharma said.
The initiative underscores NFR’s drive toward integrating cutting-edge solutions into routine maintenance practices, with a focus on safety, sustainability, and reduced reliance on manual labour in hazardous zones.
“The successful pilot opens the possibility for broader adoption of drone-based cleaning across other major stations and coaches under the NFR network,” Sharma added.
The move aligns with Indian Railways’ broader mission to modernize maintenance operations and implement global best practices.
NFR continues to position itself at the forefront of innovation, enhancing cleanliness and operational efficiency for both passengers and railway staff, the official said.
