Guwahati: Authorities exhumed the body of a man from the Lattakoojan tea estate in Assam’s Golaghat district on Monday following allegations that he died after consuming spurious country-made liquor.
This comes amid growing unrest in the area over the illegal sale of such alcohol, which locals claim has led to multiple deaths.
The deceased, identified as Rajesh Telenga, had passed away on Saturday.
After his family performed burial rituals, officials ordered the exhumation for further investigation.
Another individual from the same area, Shankar Telenga, who died on Sunday, had his body sent directly for post-mortem examination.
“The allegations of deaths due to spurious liquor are being taken very seriously. Investigations are underway,” said a district official.
Local residents, supported by community organizations, staged protests on Sunday, demanding stringent action against the illegal liquor trade in the region.

Protesters alleged that country-made liquor is being sold openly, with even teenagers falling prey to its harmful effects due to easy accessibility.
According to locals, at least 10 deaths in the area over the past year have been linked to the consumption of adulterated alcohol.
Authorities have assured the community that the claims will be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate action will be taken to address the concerns.
