Imphal: Three individuals arrested in Uttarakhand for impersonating Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s son, Jay Shah, and allegedly offering Manipur MLAs the chief ministerial post in exchange for money, have been brought to Imphal for further investigation, police confirmed on Wednesday.

The suspects reportedly contacted several Manipur legislators after the imposition of President’s Rule in the state, promising them the CM’s position for a payment of Rs. 4 crore.

The calls came following the resignation of N Biren Singh as Manipur’s chief minister in February, a senior police officer stated.

“These individuals posed as Jay Shah and demanded substantial funds from MLAs, claiming they would secure the chief ministerial post in return,” said a police statement.

Two First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered at Imphal Police Station, leading to the arrest of the suspects.

The accused were identified as Uvaish Ahmed from Nidhauri Kala in Uttar Pradesh’s Etah district, and Gaurav Nath and Priyansu Pant, both residents of Ghazipur in East Delhi.

Manipur has been in turmoil since May 2023, with ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities claiming over 250 lives and leaving thousands homeless.

The Centre imposed President’s Rule in the state on February 13 after Biren Singh’s resignation.

The state assembly, which remains under suspended animation, is due to complete its tenure in 2027.
