Guwahati: Over 8,000 dancers from the tea tribe community will grace the stage on Monday with a captivating Jhumur dance performance at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati, which will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said ambassadors of 60 countries will be coming together for the first time in the state to watch a Jhumur dance performance.

CM Sarma also announced cash incentives for all the participants of the ‘Jhumoir Binandini’ programme.

“A performance featuring 8,500 youths will commence at 5:30 PM on February 24. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, and ambassadors of 60 countries will be present,” he said.

PM Modi on his X handle wrote, “On the 24th evening, I will be at the Jhumoir Binandini programme in the vibrant city of Guwahati. This programme celebrates the culture of Assam, especially the tea tribes and other tribal communities of the state.”

PM Modi said, “On the 25, I will take part in the Advantage Assam Investment Summit, which seeks to add momentum to the state’s development journey.”

Jhumur is a centuries-old folk dance deeply rooted in the traditions of the tea tribe communities of Assam.

Traditionally, young girls dance in synchronized formations, their hands interlocked at the waist, while male performers maintain the rhythm and provide music using traditional instruments like dhol, madal, nagara, and bansuri. Often performed in open fields, Jhumur reflects both the joys and hardships of daily life, particularly during the harvest season.

Through these initiatives, the Assam government seeks to empower tea community artists and safeguard their invaluable cultural heritage.

The upcoming event is designed to be a powerful tribute to the resilience, identity, and artistic brilliance of Assam’s tea tribe communities.
