The Meghalaya government has secured investments exceeding Rs. 4,500 crore through multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed at the 2nd Climate Investments and Technology Impact Summit held at Meghalaya House, New Delhi.

The projects aim to boost the state’s infrastructure, drive economic growth, and promote environmental sustainability.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who spearheaded the agreements, highlighted the state’s commitment to fostering sustainable development.

Among the signed projects are Rs. 1,500 crore for Artificial Intelligence initiatives, Rs. 1,300 crore for a multipurpose convention centre and recreation facilities, and Rs. 1,000 crore for hydroelectric power projects.

Other notable investments include Rs. 500 crore for the Meghalaya Cable Car Ropeway project, Rs. 125 crore for advanced farming clusters, and Rs. 125 crore for converting septic and sewage waste into natural fertilizers.

Speaking at the event, Sangma emphasized the state’s vision to harmonize industrial growth with environmental conservation.

“Meghalaya is committed to sustainable economic transformation while preserving its rich ecological heritage for future generations,” he said.

The chief minister underscored the state’s unique agro-climatic diversity and its potential for high-value tourism and agriculture-based industries.

However, he noted that Meghalaya’s abundant rainfall, while a boon for agriculture, also poses challenges linked to climate change.

To address these vulnerabilities, he stressed the importance of investing in climate-resilient infrastructure and innovative mitigation strategies.

Sangma also highlighted key state initiatives, including the Livelihoods and Access to Market Projects, Community-led Landscape Management Project, and Forest Management programmes, all aimed at enhancing climate resilience and sustainable development.

He elaborated on flagship projects such as the Green Meghalaya Project, Rejuvenating Rivers and Springs programme, and Fish Sanctuaries initiative.

“These initiatives aim to strengthen the state’s resilience to climate impacts while aligning sustainable practices with economic activities reliant on natural resources,” he said.

Meanwhile, the chief minister called on Union Minister for Civil Aviation, R N Kinjarapu in New Delhi to seek his intervention in expediting approvals for the proposed extension of the Shillong Airport at Umroi in order to commence the construction work at the earliest.
