Meghalaya: Wah Umkhrah Riverfront Development Project to commence soon

Shillong: The highly-anticipated Wah Umkhrah Riverfront Development project is set to begin soon as the Meghalaya Urban Affairs Department has recently acquired the necessary land for the crucial project.

Dr. Vijay Kumar D, Commissioner and Secretary of the Urban Affairs Department, said that the department has successfully acquired the necessary land from the Shillong Golf Reserve Trust (SGRT) for the riverfront development project.

The Wah Umkhrah River, once a lifeline for Shillong, has been adversely affected by pollution and neglect, a consequence of the region’s rapid urbanization.

Unfortunately, the beauty of river Wah Umkhrah vanished during the last decades as people started construction of multi-storeyed buildings extending even right up to the brim of the water of the river.

The urban development in the natural habitats surrounding the Wah Umkhrah River has caused significant damage to water quality and biodiversity. Besides, residents of Shillong also contribute to the river’s pollution by dumping garbage and plastic waste.

To address these challenges, a comprehensive redevelopment plan has been devised by the Meghalaya government to revitalize the river and its surroundings.

The project, valued at Rs 39.46 crore, has been awarded to Ganpati Associates and Vikas Sarlalka of Shillong.

In July this year, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma presented the blueprint for the Wah Umkhrah waterfront rejuvenation and beautification project.

The riverfront development will include river cleaning, green spaces, pedestrian pathways, sports facilities, a connecting bridge, shops, an amphitheater, and public amenities.

Kumar emphasized that the initiative seeks to create a vibrant and inclusive public space that harmonizes nature and modern infrastructure.

The foundation stone for the project was laid earlier this year. Upon completion, the Wah Umkhrah waterfront is expected to become a vibrant hub for recreation, culture, and social activities in Shillong.
