GUWAHATI: With a view to promoting the valour, dedication, and patriotism of Veer Lachit Borphukan on the global stage, the Assam government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Prasar Bharati to produce a 52-episode documentary on the Ahom general.

The MoU was signed on Monday between the director of cultural affairs of Assam govt and Prasar Bharati deputy director general (content sourcing) Amit Kumar, in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other top officials of Prasar Bharati and state govt.

Thanking Prasar Bharati for coming forward and producing the documentary, the chief minister said the documentary will be broadcast nationwide, showcasing the legacy of Lachit Borphukan to a wider audience.

He said that through the documentary, Assam will showcase the state’s great historical and cultural heritage to the new generation.

This documentary will be an ode to the unparalleled role of Lachit Borphukan and his commitment to territorial integrity, the CM added.

Sarma further requested the Prasar Bharati team to be sensitive in the portrayal of Lachit Borphukan’s life, emphasizing the importance of accuracy in representing Assam’s history and culture, including the script, music, background scores, and costumes.

He stated that the documentary should be made in a way that honours the legacy of Lachit Borphukan without causing any harm to the sentiments of the people of Assam.

Lachit Borphukan (24th November 1622 — 25th April 1672) was the famous General of the Royal Army of the Ahom Kingdom of Assam who defeated the Mughals and successfully halted the ever-expanding ambitions of the Mughals under Aurangzeb.

Lachit Borphukan inspired the Assamese soldiers in the Battle of Saraighat fought in 1671, and delivered a crushing and humiliating defeat on the Mughals.

The heroic fight of Lachit Borphukan and his army remains one of the most inspiring military feats of resistance in the history of our country.

The 52-episode documentary will be broadcast across Prasar Bharati’s platforms, including Akashvani, Doordarshan, and its digital platforms.
