Advisor to the Chief Minister of Mizoram (Political) Lalmuanpuia Punte launched the Braille and sign language versions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and its allied provisions under Project CLEAR (Child Law for Everyone, Accessible and Readable).

The event took place at the I&PR Conference Hall, Lianchhiari Run, Aizawl on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Punte described the initiative as a “significant and welcome step” towards ensuring that children with disabilities have full access to their legal rights and the protections.

He emphasised that access to laws related to safety and protection is a fundamental right of all children, including those with visual and hearing impairments, and also praised the availability of the POCSO Act in Braille and sign language as a landmark achievement with nationwide importance.

Highlighting the importance of special education, Lalmuanpuia Punte urged increased focus on this filed, describing it as a special avenue for societal service. He expressed hope that the initiative would mark an important milestone in Mizoram’s journey towards inclusivity and sensitivity in addressing the needs of persons with disabilities.

Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities Vanlaldiki Sailo also addressed the gathering and lauded the collective efforts of all stakeholders involved in the successful implementation of Project CLEAR. She encouraged participants to actively support and advocate for the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities, particularly children.

The event was attended by officials of the Mizoram State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR), representatives from the Social Welfare, Women & Child Development Department, heads and students of special schools for children with disabilities, and other invited dignitaries.

This launch is being hailed as a major step toward making child protection laws more accessible, reinforcing the state’s commitment to inclusive governance and the promotion of child rights.
