Gangtok: Akshay Sachdeva, a senior officer of the Indian Police Service (IPS), has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) for Sikkim, succeeding A K Singh, officials confirmed.

Sachdeva, who is from the 1991 batch of IPS officers, was previously serving as the Special DGP for Law and Order.

Sikkim’s Chief Minister, Prem Singh Tamang, extended his warm congratulations to Sachdeva, praising his public service record and expressing confidence in his leadership.

“I offer my heartfelt congratulations to Shri Akshay Sachdeva, IPS, on his promotion to the role of Director General of Police, Sikkim. His commitment to public service assures us of his capability to lead the state towards greater progress and success. I wish him all the best in this crucial position,” Tamang wrote on social media.

The chief minister also took a moment to acknowledge the outgoing DGP, AK Singh, for his valuable contributions.

“I extend my deepest gratitude to the outgoing DGP, Shri A.K. Singh, IPS, for his exceptional service to Sikkim. His contributions will be long remembered, and I wish him a fulfilling and happy retirement,” he added.

In a separate gesture earlier in the day, Chief Minister Tamang visited the residence of former Minister Thutop Bhutia in Tashiding (Lasso) to offer his condolences.

Bhutia, who passed away on Friday, was deeply mourned by both his family and the local community.

Tamang shared his sympathy with the bereaved family, offering prayers for their strength and for the peaceful repose of Bhutia’s soul.
